Oratorio de la Santa Cueva

The Santa Cueva Oratory, which belonged to the Spiritual Withdrawal Congregation, was built adjacent to the Parish Church of El Rosario. The Congregation in Cadiz emerged in 1730 and its members included the leading figures of Cadiz’s society in the 18th century. One of them, the Marquis of Vade-Iñigo, used much of his family’s fortune from trading with Mexico to build the oratory.
The building's façade is very simple and features Doric pilasters, among which there is the public altarpiece with the canvas of Our Lady of Refuge, by Franz Riedmayer.
The inside is divided into two areas, one underground and dedicated to the passion and death of Christ and the other above ground dedicated to the exaltation of the Eucharist.  Dating back to 1783, the lower chapel was designed by Torcuato Cayón as an austere setting appropriate for penitence and where the main feature is the Calvary. On Good Friday, the Seven Last Words Sermon is given here, to the musical accompaniment of a quarter playing the work of Hadyn, commissioned by the Marquis of Valde-Iñigo.
The High or Holy Sacrament Chapel, thanks to its rich decorative style, provides a deliberate contrast with the penitential setting, where the shrine is the main feature.  It was completed in 1796 and was designed by Torcuato Benjumeda, who envisaged an oval single area following the Mannerist tradition. The upper level is noted for the artistic importance of the rounded canvases, three of which are the work of Francisco de Goya, which represent the miracle of the loaves and fish, the parable of the wedding banquet and the Last Supper, which is considered to be one of the most acclaimed set of religious paintings by the artist from Aragon.
