Roman Columbarios

Columbarios romanos

The Roman Columbarios outside the city walls are currently the only remains that can be visited of Cadiz’s Roman necropolis.
These are the remains of three architectural structures of family incineration tombs, columbarios, which can be dated back to the 1st century A.D. The layout of the burial chamber can be clearly seen in the best preserved of them.  There are niches to deposit the funerary urns, the springing of the barrel vault that covered it and part of the well through which there was access to an inner level from the surface.
During the dig, a good number of the simplest incineration and burial sites were found, and out of which only a double pit remains.
