The city of Gadir was one of the oldest Phoenician settlements in the West. Back in the first quarter of the first millennium before Christ, the Phoenicians of Tyre had already set sail on their first exploratory voyages.  They founded a stable colony at a date that was difficult to accurately establish until the discoveries unearthed under the Puppet Theatre.
The lack of architectural remains of Phoenicians settlements throughout the Mediterranean makes the Gadir archaeological site a fundamental place to discover the way of life of the former Phoenician culture.
